JAPAN - Fujikawaguchiko

Mount Fuji - photo bombing photos, invited or not.

πŸ—» Mount Fuji: Expectations? Absolutely Smashed!

Fully adjusted to the new time zone, the Young Pandas hopped on a bus from Haneda Airport to Kawaguchiko.

What an excellent decision! Much smoother than navigating Tokyo's largest train station, which rumours claimed to be the most advanced maze in the world.

And unlike on Tokyo's metro and trains nobody needed to enforce the quiet rule with that many lively tourist kidds on board. πŸ˜‚

The Young Pandas exhausted themselves with their new friends and eventually felt asleep.

Then they woke up…

And there he was.

Mount Fuji. πŸ—»

Sometimes, you travel somewhere with sky-high expectations, only to be disappointed.

Well Mr Fuji was NOT one of those places.

Oh. My. Goodness.

What an impressively enormous volcano! No exaggeration, no clever camera angles, no travel-blog hype. He really is that impressive.

And with a clear blue sky behind him? Absolutely spectacular. πŸ’™

In fact, Mount Fuji turned out to be a little too impressive.

Over the following days, it became almost impossible to take a photo without him photobombing the background. πŸ˜‚πŸ“Έ

Not that anyone was complaining. Some travel companions simply refuse to stay out of the picture!

🚠 Day 1: No Plans, yet full of  Surprises! πŸ—»πŸŒΏ

The plan was simple: scout the area and figure out what to do over the coming days.

Well… we know by now, panda's plan never really work out that way. πŸ˜‚

And Kawaguchiko was no exception.

The area was so small and easy to navigate that the little reconnaissance mission quickly turned into a full day of sightseeing.

First up: a gondola ride partway up the hill. 🚠 Then came a beautiful but rather ambitious uphill walk through a dense forest, with enormous tree roots twisting across the path.

Magical? Absolutely.

Easy on little legs? Not exactly! 🌳πŸ₯Ύ

Next, a boat tour offered a different perspective on the lake and its spectacular surroundings. 🚀

And then came the bonus round.

Our ticket also included a sightseeing bus, so Mamabear decided to hop on the least crowded one — without the slightest idea where it would take the pandas.

Because that’s how the panda family makes its best discoveries: pick a direction, hop aboard and hope for the best. And why change a winning strategy?πŸ’ͺ

So, where did the pandas end up?

In a beautiful mountain village preserving traditional Japanese life, with a history stretching back around 1,450 years. 🏑🌿 and a strong lesson about mud slide prevention.

Not bad for a day that was supposed to be just a little scouting mission! πŸ˜„

πŸ—» Day 2: Chureito Pagoda & Volcanic Caves! πŸŒ‹πŸ“Έ

The morning started with a drive to the famous Chureito Pagoda, home to one of the most photographed views of Mount Fuji. πŸ“Έ

There was just one little problem: Fuji had been hiding behind clouds all morning. πŸŒ₯

Still, the endless flight of steps kept raising expectations. Surely, a view this famous had to be worth the climb!

And then… double panda luck! πŸΌπŸ€

At the top, there were hardly any tourists, and — as if on cue — the clouds miraculously parted to reveal Mount Fuji in all its glory.

The perfect view, the perfect timing, the perfect Instagram picture! πŸ—»βœ¨

And that’s where the excitement ended.

Apart from a platform showing visitors exactly where to stand for the perfect photo, there wasn’t much else to see.

No temple visit, no hidden discoveries, no extra magic.

After approximately two minutes of sightseeing (and one very successful photo shoot), the Young Pandas were ready to move on.

Next stop: volcanic caves —  with a little more adventure and a little less posing! πŸŒ‹

The volcanic caves turned out to be fascinating… with very narrow tunnels.

Mamabear always thought she was a fairly small-sized female species, but these caves made her feel like a giant. πŸ˜‚

Luckily, the pandas had to wear helmets. Otherwise, Mamabear would undoubtedly have left with a few extra head bumps ! ⛑️

And the temperature? Freezing! πŸ₯Ά The caves were so cold that locals used to store food inside.Forget modern fridges — nature had its own more economic cooling system!

But as interesting as the caves were, the real highlight was the walk throug an  eerie, dense forest, pathed by gigantic roots surrounded by the most beautiful shades of green . 🌳✨

Nicobear was especially excited.

Throughout the trip, he kept repeating just how much he loved the beautiful nature of our world.

And honestly, wandering through that magical forest made it easy to understand why.

A great afternoon of underground discoveries and above-ground magic far away from Instagram hastags! πŸΌπŸ’š

πŸ₯· Day 3: Ninja Skills & Tourist Traps! 🏯✨

The first exciting planned activity of the trip: Ninja Village! πŸ₯·

Finally a place to unleash the inner warrior, instead of fighting over sharing snacks.πŸ˜†

After dress up to get properly into character,  it was time for the Young Pandas to put those ninja skills to the test!

Balance exercises, climbing challenges, rope courses without touching the ground, and labyrinths — the pandas tackled them all. πŸ’ͺ

Next came a ninja fight show, where the panda family got to admire the skills of the professionals.

In the afternoon, Finnibear took things one step further by joining a ninja training class.

The entire class was conducted in Japanese by a very, very, very passionate ninja lady. Did that intimidate Finnibear? Not one bit!

He followed threw like a true ninja apprentice and even completed the shuriken-throwing challenge as the best in the class! 🎯πŸ₯·

New skill acquired. Certificate secured. Future enemies warned.

Meanwhile, Nicobear had a different mission: finding his inner peace in the Zen garden. 🧘‍β™‚οΈπŸŒΏ Warrior and peace makers both valid career paths.

After collecting their well-earned certificates, the panda family headed to Oshino Hakkai, supposedly one of the prettiest spots around Mount Fuji.

The streams and traditional scenery were certainly lovely.🏞

But once again, the pandas had to admit that the most heavily hyped tourist attractions don't always live up to the hype.

Somehow, the little hidden gems discovered along the way kept winning the competition.

Maybe the real ninja skill is knowing how to dodge tourist traps!

πŸš‚ Final Day: Thomas the Train & Japan’s “Quiet Season”!

After one very rainy day with absolutely nothing to do except visit a rather creepy toy museum

— at least according to Mamabear, the Young Pandas found the unusual exhibition rather mesmerising —

it was time to let the inner child out and head to one of Japan’s many amusement parks: Thomas Land! πŸš‚πŸŽ’

Needless to say, the kids had a blast!

But the real surprise of this first week in Japan was something else entirely.

The pandas had been told that Japan has only two tourist seasons: high season and very high season. 😳

Well, someone clearly forgot to pass that memo on to Mount Fuji!

Despite visiting famous attractions and supposedly must-see tourist spots, the area felt peaceful, the sights were surprisingly quiet, and even the heavily hyped locations were far from crowded.

Who would have thought that the verdict after the first week in Japan would be:

Beautiful places, happy pandas… and surprisingly few tourists! 🐼✨

Either the Panda Family had discovered Japan’s secret quiet season, or Mount Fuji was keeping its best-kept secret all to itself. πŸ—»πŸ€«
