JAPAN - Takayama

Where Edo period merchant streets come to life.

🚌 Six Hours of Jaw-Dropping Views 🏔️

Today, the panda family headed to Takayama, with a six-hour bus ride ahead.

Yes, a big detour from the Golden Triangle… but one that turned out to be absolutely worth it!

The bus ventured deep into the mountains, leaving Kawaguchiko behind and winding through some of Japan’s most spectacular scenery.

Following a mighty river, crossing towering bridges and passing countless little waterfalls cascading down the mountainsides, the views were simply mesmerising. 🌿💦

Honestly, the scenery was so beautiful that the six hours flew by.

Of course, this being the panda family, the adventure couldn’t be just beautiful. Oh no. It also needed a little drama. 😆

Barely 20 minutes into the ride, every single passenger received an earthquake warning on their phone. 🚨📱

An earthquake?! Here?! NOW?!

Thankfully, it turned out to be a false alarm. Phew! But the memory of 45 passengers simultaneously staring at their phones with alarmed expressions was movie worth. 🎬

And honestly, the timing couldn’t have been more dramatic.

As the Pandas' bus was navigating winding mountain roads with Japanese precision, sometimes hugging the edge of the road with a lovely little 200-metre drop down to the river below.

Other times, the bus was disappearing into long tunnels carved through the mountains or crossing bridges suspended high above the valleys.

Which naturally led to the next question: If a magnitude-9 earthquake really hit right now, which of these places would be safe ? Tunnel? Bridge? Cliffside road? 🤔🙈

Normally, Mamabear would have been busy imagining every possible disaster scenario, probably gripping the seat and reconsidering all her choices. But this time? Surprisingly calm. Because, well… this is Japan, after all. 🇯🇵

Everything felt so precise, so organised, and so impressively well-engineered that even Mambear managed to keep her inner panic bear quiet.

And just to prove that Japan was determined to keep impressing the pandas, the bus arrived 45 minutes ahead of schedule.

🏚🍁 Japan Just as Imagined!

The panda family only spent three days in Takayama, but what a little Japanese dream it turned out to be! 🇯🇵✨

Pretty much everything one hopes to experience in Japan was packed into those three days.

From a traditional ryokan (Japanese-style inn), beautifully maintained and decorated,  to stunning Edo petiod architecture nestled among the forests, Takayama felt like stepping into another world. 🌿🏯

Aside from the expected temples, shrines, and stairs upon stairs, there were:

charming old bridges crossing a rushing stream filled with Japanese fish and ducks, a lively asaichi (morning market), and adorable little Japanese-style houses around every corner.

And the breakfast place? Quite possibly the best breakfast spot ever next to the river! 🥢🍙❤️

Of course, no panda family adventure would be complete without a little unexpected entertainment.

Like the occasional local lady who clearly wasn’t impressed by the Young Pandas’ volume levels and shooed them away with a firm “Shhh!” — almost like stray cats! 🐈😂 Slightly bewildering for the Young Pandas, but undeniably funny for Mamabear.

The social highlight? Making new friends at the playground without sharing a single common word.

Who needs a dictionary when climbing frames, swings, a football, and a little panda magic do all the talking? 🛝🐼⚽

And to top it all off, there was a visit to Hida no Sato (飛騨の里), a traditional folk village showcasing historic houses and rural life from the Hida region. 🏡🌲

Even Nicobear, who had apparently expected a rather boring excursion, surprised everyone with his verdict:

“Oh, this is great! I thought it was going to be boring, but it’s quiet awesome!” 😂🙌

Well, if that isn’t the ultimate travel review.

And whatever adventures may still lie ahead, Takayama, following Kawaguchiko, has already made the entire trip worth it. 🍁❤️🐼
